‘Magic mushrooms’ may be decriminalized in Denver, Colorado, this Can be after a group gathered almost double the number of signatures needed for a measure to appear on the ballot.

Organizers Decriminalize Denver, the group behind the initiative, which has more than 8,000 signatures to the Denver Elections Division for the benefit of the press, Fox affiliate KDVR reported. Only 4,726 valid signatures are required for the measure to be placed on the ballot.

The measure would allow the personal use and possession of psilocybin mushrooms by those 21 years of age or older Denver’s “lowest law-enforcement priority,” according to the measure of the language. It would also prohibit the city from spending funds to impose criminal sanctions against those who use and possess it.

In addition, the measure would create a review panel to “assess and report on the effects of the regulation” the decriminalizing of psilocybin.

Psilocybin — a hallucinogenic chemical obtained from certain types of fresh and dried mushrooms” — is illegal in the united states and is categorized by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) under “annex I”, together with drugs, such as heroin, marijuana, and LSD.

The government, which regulated the use of mushrooms in the 1970s, states that drugs have “no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse.”

The push to decriminalize the mushrooms in Denver follows a similar initiative in Oregon, where the attorney general approved language for a ballot measure to make them legal. A similar effort to legalize psilocybin has failed in California.
