A democratic candidate for a U.S. house seat in South Carolina, the party won the primary Tuesday despite allegations that he acted violently abuses his wife decades ago.

Archie Parnell received enough votes to secure face off in November, defeated his party’s nomination and the General election against incumbent U.S. Rep. Ralph Norman, a Republican Parnell of 3 percentage points in a special election last year.

The Democrat primary victory, in which he against three challengers, comes just a few weeks, after it became known that his now ex-wife accused him of physical abuse in the 1970s, according to the divorce records by the Post and courier.

According to the “acts of physical cruelty,” the ex-wife a restraining order against Parnell obtained, said they feared for their lives, and immediately wanted to divorce him.
