Death toll after the heavy earthquake in Mexico continues to rise

The death toll as a result of the earthquake that Mexico Friday hit, continues to rise. Meanwhile, ninety people died as a result of the quake.

Most of the victims fell in the zuidelijek state of Oaxaca. It was the most powerful quake in the country in more than eighty years.

The earthquake took place for the Mexican south-west coast and had a magnitude of 8.1. Thus he was more powerful than the destructive quake in 1985, large parts of Mexico City platlegde and thousands of deaths it caused.

This time kept the city largely spared, because the epicenter is further away and the earthquake occurred at a depth of almost 70 kilometers.

Hard hit

The southern city of Juchitan in the state of Oaxaca was heavily affected. Under other parts of the town hall, a hotel, a bar and other buildings are completely in ruins. According to the governor of the state, Alejandro Murat, came in Oaxaca 45 people killed, of whom seventeen in Juchitan.

Surely three hundred people were injured. Thousands of residents of low-lying coastal areas were evacuated, when after the earthquake a tsunami warning was issued. Although the waves approximately 0.7 metres higher than normal, kept the feared tidal wave.

Panic

In the 800 km away, Mexico City, Mexico, with more than twenty million inhabitants is the largest city in the world, caused the earth quake, a lot of panic, but little damage. Friday there were dozens of aftershocks felt.

According to the Mexican president, Enrique Peña Neto was the earthquake, by as much as 50 million of the total roughly 120 million Mexicans felt. Also in Guatemala and El Salvador was the quake felt. Known to fell in those countries, no fatalities.
