The energy data of two million Dutch huishouders by an employee of a power company are stolen from a central registry.
That create associations Netbeheer Nederland and Energy the Netherlands Tuesday known. It is unclear which supplier the thief worked, but in the meantime, would the employee not the business.
The affected database is normally used to household data from the exchange if they, for example, of energy transfer. It is unclear how it was possible to be here on a very large scale data.
Among the stolen data include the energy consumption and the end date of the contracts, linked to names and addresses. Phone numbers, e-mail addresses and passwords are not in the database, says spokesman Martijn Boelhouwer of Netbeheer Netherlands NU.nl.
All Dutch households with a gas or energieaansluiting in the database is represented, but they are not all the leak affected.
Netbeheer Nederland has reported the leak had to the Authority Personal data (AP). “We already had a while to worry about the security of this data,” says spokesperson Merel Eilander of the supervisor.
The AP has, therefore, before a warning is sent to the network operators, and them summed to make the database more secure. Only after the warning, which is the theft have come to light, but it is unclear whether the theft itself only took place after the AP his concerns had published.
If organisations are negligent in protecting personal data, the supervisor, after investigation, impose a fine. According Eilander, it is still too early to about to speak, and the leak is still extensively studied.
The stolen data could be misused in order to households to approach for a new energiecontract, says Boelhouwer, but according to him, seem the data is further hard to be able to be abused. Therefore, it is also still to consider whether it is necessary to aggrieved customers personally to inform you of the leak.
Netbeheer Nederland says in consultation with the Authority Personal data to will look at how a future theft can be prevented. The relevant energy supplier, would now no more data can be “not right”. It is unclear whether the stolen data has been misused.
Possible going to Netbeheer Nederland interlocutory proceedings, proceedings to set aside the data requirements. However, it is also possible that the relevant energy supplier as a case starts, ” says Boelhouwer.
