Custer State Park opens Monday, but the trails still closed

CUSTER, S. D. – Custer State Park is open again, after a week after a fire closed the popular South Dakota tourist attraction.

Park officials say that the two main roads in and out of the park, U. S. Highway 16 and State Highway 87 South, as well as the visitors center will be open Monday morning. But some hiking trails and interior roads remain closed.

Superintendent Matt Snyder asks that the visitors of the patient as well as the park to assess the damage and the repair of roads and fences.

The fire burned more than 84 square miles (218 square kilometers) since the beginning of a downed power line on Dec. 11. Officials say the fire is 95 percent contained.

The park just south of Mount Rushmore National Memorial is one of the top tourist destination.
