Court of appeal affirms new trial for subject of ‘Serial’

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – A Maryland appeals court has confirmed a judgment in which a new trial to a man whose conviction for the murder of his high school sweetheart was the subject of the popular podcast “Serial.”

Adnan Syed was convicted in 2000 of killing Hae Min Lee, and burying her body in a shallow grave in a Baltimore park. A three-judge panel on Thursday affirmed a lower court ruling granting him a new trial.

Syed’s story was widely known in 2014 a “Serial” podcast, and doubt about his guilt. The show drew millions of listeners and shattered podcast records.

A lower court vacated Syed’s conviction in 2016, quoting his lawyer not to cross-examine an important witness. Plaintiffs appealed to the Maryland Court of Special Appeals, the state’s intermediate appeals court.
