The Royal Mint of Belgium has a silver coin of 20 euro minted in honor of Toots Thielemans, who last year at age 94.
The coinage was accompanied by a ceremony in which the widow and the relatives of Toots Thielemans.
The front of the coin shows Toots Thielemans as most people know him: smiling, and with a harmonica in his hand. Also his name and his birth – and sterftejaar are listed. On the reverse, the coin (20 euro).
With the issuance of the piece brings the Royal Mint of Belgium a tribute to one of the most famous jazz musicians from the Belgian history. “I found it a very good idea to do this,” says his widow, Huguette Thielemans. “As long as there is talk about him is I’m glad, because it keeps him alive.”
“I know that Toots is very happy with it would have been. Even though he would have said that he that he does not deserve”, says Véronique Heene, a cousin of Toots Thielemans.
There are 5,000 copies struck from the silver coin, which is perhaps especially by fans and collectors in the house will be met. The price for the purchase of the coin was 46 euro.
Later this year, will the coins be struck on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the university of Liège and Ghent. There is also a currency for the sixtieth anniversary of the comic strip character gaston lagaffe / Guust Flater.
