Lanny Davis corrected Cohen-the Trump Tower story
The media ran wild with Michael Cohen reported, claims about the Trump Tower; ‘MediaBuzz’ host Howard Kurtz weighs in.
CNN stands by its “scoop” that Michael Cohen had information that President Trump knew in advance about the infamous June 2016, Trump Tower meeting with Russian officials, in spite of the source for a related story, the claims go back.
A CNN report from the 27. July headlined, “Cohen claimed Trump knew in the run-up to the 2016 Trump Tower to meet”, was co-bylined by Jim Sciutto, Carl Bernstein, and Marshall Cohen. It cited ‘sources with knowledge” and noted that the ex-Trump lawyer is ready to tell Special Counsel Robert Mueller, that Trump knew by the General Assembly in advance, contrary to repeated denials by Trump and his surrogates. The CNN report led to countless cable-news segments and sent other messages to correspond to organizations scurrying.
Among them, The Washington Post, which has since outed Cohen’s high-powered attorney, Lanny Davis as the source — when you publish an interview in which Davis back pedal.
Davis told The Washington Post on Sunday that he would “clear” that he “could not confirm regardless of what is happening.” Davis himself said in the Post that he regretted his “mistake”.
The newspaper’s original version was not as harmful as CNN and mentioned that Donald Trump Jr., allegedly told his father, was the meeting with the Russians, the CNN reported. The latest Davis interview, though, questions after a series of stories.
“Davis’ latest comments doubt as to what it can know Cohen, including the June 2016 meeting in New York’s Trump Tower, visited the trump, the eldest son of a Russian lawyer,” the Post wrote on Sunday evening. “Davis told The Washington Post that he is not the media to confirm reports that Cohen is willing to say that special counsel Robert S. Mueller III, Trump had prior knowledge of the meeting in 2016, Trump Tower.”
While the Washington Post, Davis is outed as a source and essentially was a quasi-correction, CNN stands by its reporting.
“Pro-Trump web pages claim that the CNN story was a ‘lie’, and that it unmasks always’.’ You want to, it might be exposed to “,” but it is not. The critics don’t know who CNN’s sources,” CNN’s media newsletter, said in a blurb, based on the original story as a “scoop.”
Trump has denied knowledge of all and fired back following a CNN report last month.
“I didn’T know of the meeting with my son, Don jr. Sounds to me like someone is trying to invent stories out of a relationship-free jam (Taxi, perhaps?). He kept Bill and Crooked Hillary’s lawyer. Gee, I wonder if you have helped him a choice!” Trump tweeted on July 27.
“We stand by our story, and are confident in our reporting,” a CNN spokeswoman told the Post.
Davis began to walk back to the accusations last week in an interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper, he was asked whether there is evidence that Trump knew about the meeting before it happened.
“No, it is not,” said Davis.
Axios reported last week that Cohen himself told Congress that he does not know whether Trump knew about the meeting in advance. Trump maintained that he knew nothing of the meeting in advance, and blasted the reports as ” fake news.’
On Sunday, Trump Jr., CNN blasted as a “literal fake news,” to say it was “Weird” CNN “cover” for his Reporter, the “got [the] story wrong.”
CNN has been slammed by critics since Davis backpedaled. Daily Caller media-editor of Amber Athey, said the new information brings the CNN reporting, wrote on “shaky ground” and The Daily Wire, that there is “evidence of rebuttal of the CNN report.”
