Club Brugge has immediately said goodbye to trainer Ivan Leko. The contract of the 41-year-old Croat is not renewed by the Belgian club.
Leko was in the summer of 2017 appointed by Bruges and led the club in his first season straight to the championship title. The ‘Blue-Blacks’ ended this season on the second place in the Belgian Pro League, behind champion KRC Genk.
“We can look back on two successful seasons,” says chairman Bart Verhaeghe on the site of ‘Club’. “We were two years ago, convinced of his abilities and he didn’t disappoint us. This is the fifth year in a row that we are in the top one-two finish and that I see as a proof of stability.”
Leko had a tumultuous last season at Bruges, for he was at the end of last year as a result of the large-scale investigation into bribery, corruption and matchfixing in Belgium. He even had a night in the cell remain on suspicion of money laundering, but was a day later on free feet.
Thanks Ivan Leko!

‘I am the club will be eternally grateful’
Or that incident the reason for Bruges to the contract of Leko not to renew, is not known. The coach, who between 2005 and 2009 as a player was under contract with the Belgians watching, in any case, with a proud back on his time as coach of Club Brugge.
“I am the club will be eternally grateful for the opportunity I’ve been given”, says Leko. “As a young, relatively inexperienced coach at Club Brugge can get is a privilege. The feeling that in me reigns, is proud. I watch with a warm feeling back on my time at the Club and wish them every success in the coming seasons.”
Club Brugge are currently the Dutch, Stefano Denswil, Ruud Shaper and Arnaut Danjuma Groeneveld under contract. It is not yet clear who is Leko to follow.
