Chilblains: What they are and how to avoid them?

The name of the ailment betrays already that it is a ‘seizoenaandoening’: chilblains. Experts tell how many people are suffering, what it means and more importantly: how your performance is.

There is a relatively small number of people with perniones, the official term for chilblains or hands. A group of Dutch people of all ages suffers from this. On average, the condition with one to two on the thousands of Dutch people, more often women than men.

That is also the reason why there is not a lot of knowledge and information was available about the condition, explains family doctor and researcher Ibo Souwer. “The average general practitioner sees each year, four patients with these complaints, depending on how hard the winter is. It is also not a dangerous condition. You don’t die, it is especially bothersome.” Therefore, we have decided Souwer himself doing research.

Chilblains fall under the group of disorders that are annoying, but again naturally proceed. People who suffer from chilblains or hands get in the winter burden of roodblauwe or blue spots with itching, a burning sensation or pain.

The spots are also sometimes swollen and can be on multiple places, from the nose or ears to the feet or the thigh. Who to the spots, scratches, runs the risk of blisters, inflammation, or wounds to cause. The complaints go away by itself as the temperatures rise again.

What to do against chilblains or hands:

  • Up Warm, insulating clothing helps
  • Remain In motion
  • Wear socks and gloves of cotton or wool

Investigation of effect of vitamin D

Souwer, therefore, decided itself in the subject to dive-after he came in contact with Toine translator: graphic-Janssen, professor in Nijmegen. “Previously, chilblains be treated with a vitamin D injection. That injection helped, we learned at the training.”

When these injections from the market, went, did Souwer research into the effects of it. “There came especially to the fore that the vitamin is not as effective turned out to be. To prove that something does not work, is always difficult. But the vitamin was not clearly more effective than a placebo.”

After a group of patients was interviewed about what the condition for the impact, it proved that more suffering was caused than previously assumed. “People were running up against significant limitations. From someone who is not longer an apple could peel to a farmer that his cows could not be milked because he’s not on his feet stand.”

It was noticed also that many patients a visit to the doctor stopped, often because they already knew that no concrete solution had to offer. The number of patients would therefore be possible what higher. “In some cases it was, however, apparent that the disease in some families more than in others. That familial component is also in later research demonstrated.”

Chilblains in all age groups

From Souwers research showed that the chilblains or hands may be caused by the balance that is kept between maintaining a normal body temperature and prevent skin damage by cooling. “The blood vessels draw together in the skin to the heat.”

Therefore keep the body warm, but it cools down the skin topically however. “In a counter-reaction to dilate the blood vessels of the skin regularly for a short period. If the response is disturbed, then this may be possible for skin damage, such as redness, pain or itching.”

The condition occurs in people of all ages.

What helps and what not?

After the phd research of Souwer have the Dutch Gps Association and the website Thuisarts.nl their information about the disease and treatment adjusted. There are no medications which help to prevent the condition, stressed the doctor. Also, there is no evidence that massage or skin rub it with cream or oil helps.

Those who are against the chilblains or hands wants arms may be of different tips to take to heart. So it is important to the body to keep it warm, possibly with the help of breathable and insulating clothing. People who have to move little or lean, run a higher risk of chilblains or hands, says the doctor.

Also the wearing of socks of cotton or wool, and waterproof shoes, you can the feet warm and dry. Think also to the wearing of gloves and ear muffs. Also, make sure that there is no to tight clothes, which make possible the flow of blood and restricts, is worn.

Avoid in addition to scratching, abrasion or rub on spots of the skin by the cold, an other color.
