AUSTIN, Texas – Authorities say a Central Texas man who pulled a gun from his waistband while cuffed on the back of a patrol car talked about suicide before fatally shooting himself.
Austin interim police chief Brian Manley said Tuesday that the 19-year-old Zachary Khabir Anam discussed suicide as the officer Iven Wall drove him to the prison.
Manley says Wall told Jim, who was suspected of shoplifting and carrying a controlled substance, that counselling would be available for him in prison, but Jim responded he wasn’t sure he could wait that long.
The police says Jim pulled the gun and shot himself Sunday after a short stand-off.
Manley says an investigation continues or Wall searched for Anam.
Wall and officer John Ricker, who drove a patrol car to the next Wall, are on administrative leave.
