Some of the largest cities in the United States have taken it upon themselves to start a war on plastic bags under the guise of environmental protection. But how many have not discover more, plastic bags are the scourge that you imagine, and your nanny policy will continue to fail.
Chicago is the latest, go back to the well.
Earlier this month, mayor Rahm Emanuel’s budget has been approved by the city Council with a 7-cent tax on plastic bags – 5 cents of which goes to the city. While the bag tax, as these are sold, such as an ecological necessity, studies in a number of locales have shown that bag taxes, the environment, seldom do much good, and cities, use easily raised the money to plug budget holes.
Plastic bag fees are just a stealth tax increase that disproportionately hits families who go shopping more frequently.
This is Chicago, the second pocket.
In 2015, the city will introduced a plastic bag ban was justified on the basis of the thickness of the bag, the concerns then, as now, of the environment. It failed miserably. Consumers simply shut down, with the thicker bags, and do not re-use often.
