Investigators on Monday charged a Chicago man with multiple counts of first-degree murder after a weekend shooting rampage left five of his neighbors to death in what police called an act of ” cruelty.”

Krysztof Marek, 66, was charged with five counts of first-degree murder in Saturday’s fatal shooting, police spokesman Anthony guglielmi said. A woman died at a hospital Sunday, while the four other victims were pronounced dead shortly after the shooting took place.

“[T] he incident stemmed from a dispute between Marek and his neighbors, and what he’s been accused of nothing less than of cruelty,” guglielmi said on Twitter.

Marek was known to his neighbors in the apartment complex, police said.

Marek, who had been allegedly living in the north-western Side of the complex for the last 15 years, killed a family of three males and one female, were sitting at a table to eat at 5:30 pm

He then went on to be a unit one floor up and shot a woman, seriously injuring her. The woman was rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery, but died Sunday morning, according to police.

All of the victims appeared to be adults and know Marek, according to police. None of the apartments showed signs of a break-in.

Police said Marek had a history of complaints from other residents. but investigators “don’t know what is it.”

Marek’s neighbours have written to the retired worker as having “anger management issues.” One woman told the Chicago Sun-Times that Marek was always a very kind” to “he hit me” some six months ago.

Marek, who has no criminal background, and had fallen into deep debt over the past few years, the paper reported, quoting court documents.

He is expected to appear at a bail hearing on Monday.
