Chicago girl, 7, was shot in the neck while trick-or-treating, police say

A 7-year-old girl, dressed as a bumblebee, was shot and killed while trick-or-treating in the Chicago area on Thursday evening.

The girl, who was shot to death in her lower neck, was taken to a local hospital and is in critical condition, according to Fire department spokesman Larry Langford. The 31-year-old man who was in the vicinity of the girl who was hit by a bullet in the back of his left hand and was admitted to the hospital in good condition.

The shooting happened around 5:30 p.m., in the Little Village neighborhood on Chicago’s Southwest Side, according to authorities.

Authorities said the man and girl were walking along a road, when a group of men approached and one of them shot at the pair. Chicago police spokesman Anthony guglielmi says investigators believe the girl was an unintended victim.

“We heard the shots … four shots, and I walked out of there,” witness, Lali, Lara, told the Chicago Tribune. “The girl’s father cried out,” My little girl has been shot and killed.'”

Lara said as she rushed to the little girl and her family at the cell phone store where she worked. Lara said as she held the girl’s hand and against her chest to slow the bleeding.


“I was pushing her, calling her name,” Lara said. “She was looking at me, and I called out her name. I’ve had kids, I would go crazy if something ever happened to my children.”

The police had no description of the shooter, and no one was in custody.
