Charlize Theron has, for many years, never spoken about the tragic death of her father, who was murdered by her mother. “I think that what me and my adult life has influenced that as a child I every day had to live with an alcoholic.”
“That you woke up and didn’t know what was going to happen,” says South African actress to radio host Howard Stern.
The 41-year-old Theron was 15 years old when her father died. For years she was silent about his death. The act of her mother was seen as self-defense and they went unpunished.
“I just did as if nothing had happened”, “I was told that my father had died in a car crash.” Only when she late twenties, she went into therapy. Her mother has never sought therapy.
“Her philosophy was: this is horrible. Recognize that this is terrible. Now make a choice. Is it you? Are you going to sink or go swimming? That was it,” says Theron.
According to the actress, her mother and herself the night well processed. “I think we are still living the life we have had to handle that, and that is what people don’t realize. It is not only what that night happened.”
