WASHINGTON – The chairman of the House Oversight Committee says an intruder on the White House garden was able to “look through” a White House window and the “rattle at the door handle” before being arrested last week.
Utah Congressman Jason Chaffetz (CHAY’-fits) tells CNN he was told by the Homeland Security Secretary that the person who went unnoticed on the grounds for 17 minutes, while the President, Donald Trump was inside.
Chaffetz calls the incident a “complete and utter total failure.”
The Secret Service says in a statement that the intruder has violated a 5-foot outer fence and scaled an 8-foot vehicle gate to gain access.
The agency stresses that the intruder will never be in the White House.
It is still investigating and has the extra security of messages, technological improvements, and new response protocols in place.
