‘Carol’ is the best film of 2016, according to Flemish critics

The miracle of Todd Haynes by 15 Flemish critics voted the best film of the past year in cinema.


‘Carol’ is based on the autobiographical novel The Price of Salt ” that the true-crime author Patricia Highsmith in 1952 published under the pseudonym Claire Morgan. It is only the sixth film by the American filmmaker, Todd Haynes, and he tells the story of a hidden lesbian relationship.

The two hoofdactrices were lauded as the best actress: Cate Blanchett, with an Oscar and her tegenspeelster Rooney Mara in Cannes. “Carol” was at the beginning of this year in the Belgian screens released. The 15 film critics supplied all their own top 10.

On the basis of these lists was the top 10:

2. “The Revenant” by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu

3. “The Assassin” by Hou Hsiao-hsien

4. “Anomalisa” by Charlie Kaufman and Duke Johnson

5. “Toni Erdmann” by Maren Ade

6. “Frantz” of François Ozon

7. “Paterson Jim Jarmusch

8. “A Quiet Passion by Terence Davies

9. “Vita Brevis” by Thierry Knauff

10. “45 Years” by Andrew Haigh

The only Belgian film that this top 10 got, is “Vita Brevis” by Thierry Knauff. However, there were entries for “La Fille Inconnue”, by the Dardenne brothers, “Galopping Mind” by Wim Vandekeybus, “Le Ciel Flamand” of Peter Monsaert, “L’économie du Couple” Joachim Lafosse “Umbrella” of Valéry Rosier, “Les premiers, les derniers” by Bouli Lanners and “Les hommes d’argile” by Mourad Boucif.

Other entries were there for the Flemish documentaries “The Land of The Enlightened” by Pieter-Jan De Pue, “Shadow World” by Johan Grimonprez and “Grands Travaux” by Olivia Rochette and Gerard-Jan Claes.

In total, there were 67 different movies listed. Last year was “Son of Saul” by the Hungarian filmmaker Laszlo Nemes voted film of the year.
