Carnival Cruise Line says it is a failure of an engine with a turbocharger” is to blame for the plumes of dark smoke seen coming from the Carnival Liberty during a recent sailing trip.
The ship is currently on a two-week cruise to the western Caribbean that left from Galveston, Texas, on Oct. 27, and arrived in the Cayman Islands for a couple of days later on. While it is just off the coast in the vicinity of George Town, and a photographer snapped a photo of what appeared to be a black plume of smoke rising above the Freedom.

The photographer wished to remain anonymous, according to Cruise Law News, the photo was posted.

Carnival Cruise Line has been the explanation for the incident, blaming a malfunction in the smoke.
“While it is sailing into the Port of Grand Cayman last week, the Carnival Freedom, sent a dark smoke coming from the chimney. This was in connection with the failure of one engine, with a turbo-compressor,” the cruise line said. “The engine was quickly shut down and the smoke began to disappear.”
The cruise line also reported that the environment team was to “immediately” should be made aware of the incident and the problem was solved. The ship is to be operational and in seaworthy throughout the period of time, the Carnival will be added.
