Vincent Kompany leaves after eleven years at Manchester City. The 33-year-old captain has decided to take his expiring contract with the English champion not to renew.
“There are many people who have made a major contribution to the rebirth of Manchester City, but probably none more important than Vincent Kompany,” says City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak on Sunday on the site of his club.
“Vincent stands for the essence of this club. Over the past decade, he was the soul and the beating heart of an incredibly talented team. He was a strong leader in the dressing room and as an ambassador off the field. He will always be remembered in the City.”
Kompany will soon announce what he is next season going to do. He will, in any case, in september, a testimonial, a final contest, of City get.
“It’s overwhelming, but it is time for me to leave. I feel only gratitude,” says Kompany. “I will never forget how loyal the City fans have always been against me, in good but especially in bad times.”
“Sheikh Mansour (owner of City, red.) my life and the lives of all the City fans have changed and for that I am eternally grateful for. We have the established order shaken up and I think that’s great.”

Kompany has won four times the championship title
Kompany got in August 2008 for 8.5 million euros from Hamburger SV to Manchester City, more than a week for the takeover of the English club by the wealthy Abu Dhabi United Group.
The Belgian played since then – despite a lot of injuries – 360 games (twenty goals) for City and grew to become captain and mainstay of the new season. He won four times the championship title twice, the FA Cup four times, the League Cup twice, the Community Shield (English super cup) with the ‘Citizens’.
Kompany was this season due to various injuries – no fixed basisspeler more at City, but he made the probably most important goal of the season for his club. In the penultimate round was the central defender with a magnificent bang in the only goal against Leicester City (1-0). A week later it was City champion, just like in 2012, 2014 and 2018.
Saturday, the 87-fold international his last duel for the City. He was ninety minutes in the field during the FA Cup final against Watford (6-0 victory).
