Medical symptoms resulting from stress are often examined by researchers, but scientists prove itself a risk. So get researchers who are busy with their promotion is often a long time, so much stress, that they have health problems and (temporary) failure.

According to the Phd Network Netherlands (PNN) is that bad for the candidate, for the science and for the economy. As a phd student finally drops out, it is money thrown away. How many people exactly, is unclear. Therefore, argues the network for a nationwide survey.

Research in Belgium shows that half of the phd students with mental health problems it faces. Rolf van Wegberg, spokesman of the PNN will find that shocking, and think that this is in the Netherlands not much else is. “But what little reports, often in the individual stories.”

“A research programme is located at the university in Leiden in the works, but there must be time and money to be freed up,” said the spokesman. He hopes that the universities and the scientific institutes, KNAW and NWO this over the bridge.

Great pressure

According to Van Wegberg are promoverende researchers under great pressure. “They should be hard and long work, the work is never complete, they have little freedom, there is a lot of bureaucracy and the pressure to publish is great. They are also often afraid their contract to lose,” he says.

What it regards the scientific world quickly and seriously to work with the stress and the consequences. “The pressure on phd students is of all times, but it’s really not healthy to continue.”
