Cambodia scorns U.S. sanctions against high-ranking military officer

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia – Cambodia’s military has responded with the scorn of an announcement by the United States that it has on the black list, an important senior army officer on human rights violations, the blocking of his access to all assets in the U.S.

The Ministry of finance announced sanctions Tuesday against Gene. Bun Hieng, commander of Cambodia’s Prime minister Bodyguard Unit, which it said was involved in serious human rights violations for at least the past 21 years, including a 1997 incident in which a citizen of the V. S. received wounds from shrapnel.

A Cambodian Defense Ministry statement issued on Wednesday expressed regret for the AMERICAN action, which the stupid, unjust and not supported by any evidence.

Bun Hieng told The Associated Press that he had not committed human rights violations, and owns no real estate in the United States.
