A California mother suspected of killing her daughter threw her toddler son out a second story balcony before jumping himself — and landing on her face, police said.

“This is very unusual. It is very tragic,” Upland police Capt. Marcelo Blanco said.

Upland police went to the building after a neighbor called 911 to report a screaming child. The caller then reported that Ortega keep the 1-year-old boy in the second story landing and attack him. Tierra went to jump on the balcony when the police arrived.

Ortega is accused of tossing her toddler son out of the two-story landing and then jump himself.

“From what we gather, it was a deliberate act, it was not by accident,” Blank said.

Ortega and her son were given first aid at the place. Agents in her apartment, where they said the 24-year-old daughter, believed to be 6 to 7 months old, was found unresponsive and not breathing.

Ortega and her children were taken to the hospital where the baby girl later died from her injuries. Blank said officials believe that the child had a skull fracture and some internal injuries, but it is unclear how she was hurt.

The 1-year-old boy suffered a broken foot from the fall. Ortega was treated for facial injuries.

Residents mill about like Mountain-the police are investigating the scene, where police say a mother threw her young son from the second story balcony of an apartment complex and jumped in himself as the police arrived.

Residents of the apartment complex described the horrific scene to KTLA. Michelle Furlong, said a neighbour was also taken to the hospital after she suffered a nervous breakdown from watching Ortega throw the toddler off the balcony.

“It’s really taken with her. They said that they have seen the baby thrown, how they picked up the baby, threw, and then she threw herself,” Furlong said. “My heart is broken because they are two innocent children.”

It is unclear what the reason for the incidents. Ortega’s husband, who allegedly works in the waste management sector, was not home at the time and found out about what happened when he saw the police in his apartment, KTLA reported.

He spoke with the police, but “has no idea what led to this,” Blanco said.

The police said that an investigation is underway to determine the motive.
