Bulgaria sets boerkaverbod in

Gelaatsbedekkende clothing is now in Bulgaria is prohibited. Who even longer a burqa or other gezichtsbedekking bears, should fear for a fine of a few hundred euros or a discount on his or her benefit.

The boerkaverbod, as the measure is popularly called, was a highlight of the small, nationalist ruling party Patriotic Front. The measure would be necessary to address the threat of islamic inspired terrorism head on.

A lot of burka’s are there in the Bulgarian streets, although the country has a large muslim minority of mainly Turkish origin.

The political party of the Turkish minority, the DPS, called the boerkaverbod an “initiative of people who are hostile to strangers”. After the assent of the parliament with the measure left the DPS members of the audience.

A similar ban is already a few years in the Netherlands and Belgium.
