Brouwer/Meeuwsen begins EK beach volleyball with victory
Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen are the european CHAMPIONSHIPS of beach volleyball in the Latvian Jurmala Wednesday started with a victory.
The Dutch couple, as sixth placed, defeated the Latvians Aleksandrs Solovejs and Toms Smedins in two sets, 21-16 and 21-17.
Later in the day to play, Brouwer and Meeuwsen has against the Austrians Tobias Winter and Robin Seidl. The Belgians Dries Koekelkoren and Tom van Walle on Thursday that the last opponents in the group stage.
Brouwer and Meeuwsen, the world champions of 2013, lost two weeks ago at the world CHAMPIONSHIPS in Vienna, surprisingly, already in the second round by a defeat against Koekelkoren/Van Walle.
“It is always nice to have your first race to win,” said Brewer after the duel with Solovejs/Smedins. “Our goal at this tournament is to have a coin to deal with it.”
For the men, there is no English team in action.For the women Madeleine Meppelink/Sophie van Gestel, Jolien Sinnema/Joy Stubbe and Annemieke Driessen/Ilke Meertens.
Driessen and Meertens were Wednesday in their first groepsduel no chance against the first seeded German duo Chantal Laboureur and Julia Sude: 13-21 and 7-21.
Meppelink and Van Gestel had success in their first contest. The as fifteenth-placed pair was too strong for the Finsen Neat Tuominen and Riikka Lehtonen: 21-17 and 21-12.
Both couples play Thursday, their two other group matches.
