Brotherhood sued for ‘Scumbag of the Week’ hazing incident

TALLAHASSEE, Florida. – A former Florida State student suing a fraternity, claiming he was seriously injured in an April hazing incident.

Lawyers for the 20-year-old Nicholas Mauricio on Wednesday lodged a complaint against Alpha Epsilon Pi and a number of its members.

The suit says Mauricio was voted as the “Scumbag of the Week” in the spring of this year and that meant that he had to be slapped in the face by the fraternity brothers. Instead of a mild slap, the suit says, he was slapped in the face so hard he fell and hit his head. Lawyers say he spent five days in a Tallahassee hospital intensive care unit and now is not able to return to school.

Florida State has suspended Alpha Epsilon Pi, and four people face felony hazing charges.

An Alpha Epsilon Pi national spokesperson says that the brotherhood is not received the lawsuit yet.
