British Airways, Lufthansa suspend all Cairo flights over security concerns

British Airways and Lufthansa, said on Saturday that they were temporarily suspending flights to the Egyptian capital, Cairo, on specified safety-and security system.

The British airline said it was cancelling flights to the Egyptian capital in a week. The German airline said that its normal business operations would resume Saturday.

“We are constantly evaluating our security procedures at all airports in the world, and they have suspended flights to Cairo for seven days as a precautionary measure, to allow for further review,” BA said in a statement to Fox News.

The airline did not elaborate on the reason for the sudden interruption, but added that it would not operate an aircraft unless it is safe to do so. A spokeswoman for the airline said: “we’ve never had issues of safety and security” when asked what was the reason for the move.

Lufthansa said it was suspending its flights as a precaution, and with the mention of “safety”, but it is not “safe”, such as the health care sector. Company spokesmen would not comment on what the motivation for the suspension. Lufthansa spokesman Tal Muscal said that the company will have two flights a day to Cairo, and one each from Frankfurt, and Munich, germany.

The British ministry of Foreign affairs in its travel advisory to a warning at the discretion of the airline. The agency said an estimated 415,000 British nationals visited Egypt in the end of 2018, and that the majority of visits are trouble free.”

It is advised to go to the Southern part of the country’s Sinai peninsula, Sharm el-Sheikh and the surrounding area, where a bomb took the Russian aircraft by 2015, and the areas to the west of the Nile Valley and the Nile Delta region.

The agency has also warned travelers that terrorists are very likely to carry out attacks in Egypt, with the most common in the Northern part of the Sinai peninsula.


“The terrorists have attacked tourists in Egypt in the past,” the travel advisory said.”There is a heightened threat of terrorist attacks against Coptic Christians by extremists linked to Daesh-Sinai peninsula, Egypt.”

Message for egypt’s civil aviation ministry, were not immediately returned on Saturday.
