The Hopkins family were on their way to visit relatives when they were told that they would not be allowed in the plane.

Mhairi, her husband Tom and their children, Sebastian, 14, Chloe, 12, and ten-year-old Dominic, were jetting off to scatter her father’s ashes on the island of the Balearic islands.

The 43-year-old fashion buyer from the West of London, said: “We were [lining] have told to go to the gate when she asked if anyone wanted to be bumped from the flight.

“No one came forward and then they said, we’re going to pick 14 people because it’s so hot that we need to have more petrol in order to take off.

“Then they read the names of some of the people and said: ‘family Hopkins’. There are five of us, with special needs, and she seemed to not care at all.

“I had to explain to my daughter, who has been counting down the days until the holiday, that we were not going to go to her grandmother in Ibiza, but we were planning to go to a hotel.

“Then they said, we will book the 11:15 hour flight from Heathrow tomorrow morning, which we later found out was not guaranteed and that we had another queue to get us on another flight.

“At that time I was so furious because my daughter was still incredibly angry.

“I mean, it’s not a surprise, it is warm today, it was warm yesterday, and that is what I think everyone was so furious about.

“And bump from a family with a daughter with special needs and not to care was extraordinary.

“They were not able to cope with the situation.

“I think we are just before the well kicked because more and more flights were canceled.”

The airport said: “London City Airport was affected by the extreme heat which is designed to operate safely, unfortunately, passengers needed to be offloaded from 14 British Airways flights.

“We are working with the airline to ensure the passengers to their destination as quickly as possible and we apologize for the inconvenience.”

A BA spokeswoman said: “just As other airlines operating from London City today, British Airways flights were affected by the extreme heat.

“Due to the unique nature of the airport with a short runway and steep take-off, extreme temperatures affect air pressure so the aircraft weight can be reduced.

“Unfortunately this meant that we were forced to reduce 20 customers of our Ibiza service.

“We work with them to offer accommodation and re-book them on the flights of tomorrow.”
