HOUSTON – A federal grand jury has accused a Brazilian couple accused of the help of their grandson from Texas illegally stay in Brazil after his mother allegedly violated a custody in a divorce proceeding.
Carlos and Jemima Guimaraes were indicted Wednesday in Houston on two points — international parental kidnapping and conspiracy.
The plaintiffs claim that the couple helped their daughter, Marcelle Guimaraes, keeping her son in Brazil after they found him there in 2013 and failed to return to the United States, in breach of the authority.
Marcelle Guimaraes, was also indicted. The mother and the boy remain in Brazil.
Carlos and Jemima Guimaraes are in federal custody in Miami, where they were arrested, earlier this month, following the arrival of Brazil. A court to appoint lawyers is set for Monday in Houston.
