Black students wrongly accused of leaving without paying

ST. LOUIS – Police in a suburb of St. Louis view of what has happened after 10 black students were stopped by officers and escorted by squad cars to a restaurant after they mistakenly suspected of leaving without paying.

The incident earlier this month in Clayton. Police chief Kevin Murphy says that an internal investigation was started after complaints from the parents of one of the students.

The students, all incoming freshman at the University of Washington walked to a light rail station around 12:30 a.m. July 8, when they were stopped by police and told that they were suspected of leaving an IHOP restaurant without paying, although some showed revenue.

After they headed back, the manager told the police the students were not the ones who left without paying.

The university called the action “unacceptable.”
