Billy Porter wanted to make a statement with his 2019 Oscars look — and he certainly succeeded in his goal.
The “Pose” star turned heads as he walked the red carpet in a custom-made Christian Siriano tuxedo dress. His unique style is essentially “broke the Internet” becoming a top trend on Twitter and Google night of Sunday to Monday.
Ahead of Hollywood’s biggest night, Porter explained the inspiration behind his iconic look.

“If you’re black and you’re gay, masculinity is in question. I went with a lot of homophobia in connection with my clothing choices. [Even] when I had my first contract with A&M Records, I was silent for a long time,” Porter, 49, revealed to Vogue, pointing to his role in “Kinky Boots” really helped ground him.

“Now I’m in a space where, Pose, I am invited to be on the red carpet and I have something to say through clothes. My goal is to be a piece of walking of the political art every time I the show. To meet the challenge of the expectations. What is masculinity? What does that mean? The women who every day in the pants, but the minute a man wears a dress, the seas part,” he later added.
Fans of the actor and performer gushed about Porter’s “fabulous” outfit Sunday.

“I wish I had a Billy Porter when I was a child. You should not want to wear a dress to be inspired by someone who is not afraid to be herself,” a Twitter user wrote.
“Billy Porter just set the bar ridiculously high for the #Oscars of fashion,” another said.
“The king of Siam better watch out cause Billy Porter has come to teach the children,” a third chimed in.
Porter thanked Christian Siriano for making the special dress for him in an Instagram post Sunday — just hours before the Oscars officially start.
“If you go to the Oscars, you have to dress up. Thanks @csiriano for making this custom couture masterpiece. @oscarheyman you have yourself surpassed again with your iconic jewellery,” he caption of the image, which is much more than 65,000 likes within one hour.
The 49-year-old also credited New York Fashion Week for inspiration for the design.
“I’ve always wanted wearing a ball gown, I did not know when. I was inspired by [this past New York Fashion Week], because there is a discussion going on about integration and diversity. There were so many people of different races and vote,” he told Vogue, adding that the appearance has him a sense of “free, open and radiant.”
