Belgian rundvleesketen mandatory stunned slaughter

Belbeef, the interprofessional organization of links from the rundvleesketen unites, today announced that its specifications are stunned slaughter from now on will be mandatory for users of the Belbeef standard. The sector wants, as structural steps to take to a higher standard for more animal welfare and more transparency to the slachtmethode. Beef comes from animals that are not stunned family, will no longer qualify for sale under the Belbeef standard.

The members of the board of directors of Belbeef took the decision to stunned slaughter is a requirement to enroll in the Belbeef specifications. With the introduction of this renewed Belbeef-standard connects the sector to the retail and the butchers to clear guarantees for quality and animal welfare of Belgian beef to offer.

‘Clear signal’

The new standard shall enter into force on 1 October 2018. There is a transition phase of three months to slaughterhouses, farmers and certification institutions will have the possibility to take all necessary measures to meet this new version of the specifications to comply with.

“With the introduction of our renewed standard gives the industry a very clear signal,” says Christel Buyse, president of the Board of Directors of Belbeef. ‘With our renewed specifications, we want the standard of quality in all areas withdrawing. This way, we give the butchers, retail chains and their customers a very clear guarantee to quality and animal welfare. Belgian beef under the Belbeef standard sold, for the best quality and conscious care for the welfare of the animal.’
