An iron age temple discovered near Jerusalem, is shedding new light on an ancient Biblical city.
The temple complex, which dates back to the end of the 10th and beginning of the ninth century b.c., it was discovered in 2012 at the Tel Moza near Jerusalem. Identified as the Biblical city of Mosaics, in the kingdom of Judah, and archaeologists from Tel Aviv University and the Israel Antiquities Authority excavated the site in the previous year. It has been completely excavated two of the buildings of the temple, and the structure below it.
The area at the bottom of the temple, and to the first floor, including man and animal-shaped figurines in the shape of animals and people, as well as a stand decorated with lions and sphinxes that would have been used by an ancient cult. A stone altar, and a stone offering table, and a pit filled with ashes and animal bones were also found at the site.

The experts are intrigued by the findings, which show that there is another sanctioned temples in the famous temple of Solomon in Jerusalem. Solomon’s Temple was destroyed during the Babylonian conquest of Jerusalem in 587 or 586 B. c

“It would be a monumental temple in real life in the heart of Judah and outside of Jerusalem?” Did Jerusalem know about this?” Tel Aviv University doctoral student and the elven shua Kisilevitz, wrote in a statement. “If that is the case, this other temple that may have been part of the Judahite administrative system. In the Bible, the details of the religious reform of King Hezekiah and King Josiah, who consolidated the worship practices of the Temple of Solomon in Jerusalem, as well as eliminated in the cultic activities within its territory.”
“Despite the fact that the bible is to describe Hezekiah and Josiah’s reforms were sanctioned temple in Judah, and in addition to the official temple in Jerusalem,” said Tel Aviv University Professor Oded Lipschits, the explanation for it. “Our discoveries have fundamentally changed the way we understand the religious practices of the Judahites.”

Experts are of the opinion that the Mosaics were in the first instance, a granary, and if it is, there has been a temple to be built.
The excavation of the site, it will still be out this spring.
