The European Club Association (ECA) has, according to foreign sports media reached an agreement in principle on the reform of the Champions League. That is especially advantageous for major competitions. If they are implemented, can Belgium from 2018 no two teams in the Champions League.
This week wrote the renowned sport newspapers, La Gazzetta dello Sport and Mundo Deportivo that the European Club Association (ECA) reform of the Champions League works. The newspapers speak of an agreement in principle.
According to that agreement would be the four major leagues (Germany, England, Italy and Spain) starting in 2018 four guaranteed participants in the group stage of the Champions League. Now, there are three in the group stage and in the play-offs for the pools.
Of the four tickets in the new system there would be three to the first three teams in the local league. A fourth ticket would be a wildcard on the basis of historical performance, or the European coefficient. This would mean that in the current situation, teams like Manchester United and AC Milan – is now condemned to the Europa League – fished.
The big teams would be so much more certainty on Champions Leaguevoetbal and would their income from, for example, sponsorship will rise. The predictability would also decrease, because it is often the same teams that get there early uitgeknikkerd or far progressed.
Bad news for the smaller football countries. The French Ligue 1, Portuguese Liga and the Russian Premier League would be after the reform two hard places. Countries such as Ukraine, Belgium, the Netherlands, Turkey and Switzerland would be one direct ticket to the group stage. The other five tickets would be divided among the other European federations after a preliminary round. For comparison: now fight the ploegne in the preliminaries for the ten remaining tickets.
The situation is also negative for Belgium. Now Belgium two tickets: one for the group stage, which is now for Club Bruges, and one for the third qualifying round this year to Anderlecht. In the new situation would be that last ticket loss.
Michael Verschueren, Belgium participates in the ECA, responding nuanced in The Latest News. “I am also shocked, yes. Asking around taught me that it is just a approach of the big competitions, like the medium-sized and small countries think about the future of the Champions League. We should not panic, there is still no decision taken. For september, there will be no clarity.”
That is the major leagues, the Champions League more to want to hit back, is no surprise. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport want teams like Bayern, Juventus and Barcelona like a Super League, a League with only the top teams. That would be detrimental for the local competitions in the weekend and the Champions League out of the market. Both legal and economically feasible, according to La Gazzetta, but the Premier League remains a problem. That is 3.2 billion worth of tv rights while the Champions League and the Europa League, but at € 2.3 billion. The English will not want to be binding to take part in the new competition. (JVL)
