MANBIJ, Syria – The top U.S. general in the coalition fighting the Islamic State, the group has pledged American troops would remain in the northern Syrian Kurdish city of Manbij in spite of Ankara, the requirements for a U.S. withdrawal.
Lt.-Gen. Paul E. Funk’s comments came during a visit Wednesday to U.S. troops in Manbij.
Funk, says the American armed forces in Manbij in support of their Syrian Kurdish allies, and deescalate tensions after the Turkish incursion into northern Syria.
Turkey began an offensive last month to drive Syrian Kurdish gunmen from the enclave of Afrin, and has threatened from the expansion of the operation to Manbij. Ankara believes that the Kurdish fighters “terrorists” and allied Kurdish insurgents in Turkey.
This brings the prospect of a direct confrontation between NATO allies US and Turkey, on opposite sides in the conflict.
