nearvideo-Howard Kurtz: Why journalists fall into the trap of Smollett
‘MediaBuzz’ host Howard Kurtz weighs in on the mainstream media, the reaction to the Chicago Police Department press conference on the “Empire” actor Jussie Smollett fees for incorrectly filing a hate crime report.
The Chicago police superintendent made no effort to hide what his anger as he denounced Jussie Smollett for “reprehensible” behavior of falsely claiming to the victim of a racist and homophobic attack.
He also had a few choice words for the media for overplaying the melodrama.
“I only wish that the families of gun violence in this city got so much attention,” Eddie Johnson said.
It still seems incredible that the star of the Fox show “Empire” would be traumatizing blow up, his career and the trauma of his city for what the cops say was an effort to force his boss to give him a salary increase. And he let his defenders are scrambling to say something.
Johnson was extremely said force at a televised media conference, he had to distract, to investigate the valuable resources, all of which was charged as a hate crime and fulfilled to a hate hoax.
“Why should someone — especially an African-American-man — to use the symbolism of a noose, the false accusations?” Johnson asked. “How could someone look at the hatred and suffering in connection with this symbol and see to manipulate a way, the symbol next to his own public profile?”
And it was a hoax with a political twist, since Smollett, claimed his faux-attacker — two Nigerian brothers, he rented had — had cried out that this “MAGA.” This is fueling a corrosive narrative that some journalists and commentators have a lot of faith too quickly, that Trump Fans were straying on the road with a rope, to search, to a prominent gay black man.

In fact, the President who once called the alleged attack a “terrible,” tweeted about the smearing of his Make America Great Again trailer. “What is with MAGA and the millions of people you offended by your racist and dangerous comments!?”

And as the red flags arose — such as, why Smollett delayed to call the police and reluctant was his mobile phone — those who have been reported as well.
But some journalists and experts were quick to collect the alleged incident to score political points.

Buzzfeed writer Kevin Fallon tweeted: “those who believe, to the support, you Know, is not synonymous with the provision of artillery for weapons capable of bigotry needs to a hard look in the mirror.”
Fallon did a followup post: “I found the previous inaccurate tweets and more reports about Jussie Smollett. What a despicable act, when a new update is available: use & reinforce the hatred, division and politicization; the abuse of media and police resources, and make it all the more difficult to report for the victim.”
Don Lemon said he cried Smollett, every day to see how he’s doing. And the CNN host does not condemn him.
“If Jussie story is not true,” he told the audience, “he squandered the goodwill of a whole lot of people. He has not even lied to a lot of people, if it is not true, including me, and that’s cool.”
