As Michael Cohen decided to send Trump a carefully calibrated message

It is quite obvious that Michael Cohen, sent a sharp message, if he sat down with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos.

What is less obvious is, how deliberate, and meticulously crafted, his words, especially about topics not directly with him, and his strategy in the direction of the intended recipient: President Trump.

Based on my reporting, the President’s former personal attorney, only the exhibition was a Declaration of independence from his longtime boss, he told the world that he does not agree with some of Trump’s core positions.

And the sets were carefully rehearsed, like a finger-in-the-eyes trumps not shot, just to give you quiet, that he is not a “punching bag” or “occupation” as a “villain” as “part of any defense strategy.”

Cohen has two objectives. After he was a key figure in a Federal investigation, he will try to better position themselves and make a deal, when in fact, he writhes with a view to criminal charges. And he takes the first step in the direction of restoring its battered reputation in the court of public opinion.

On a personal level, I said Cohen was angry and depressed is drawn to Trump in the Robert-Müller-probe due to his past service. But he felt relieved, because the ABC sitdown headlines made to believe that he can redeem himself if only he we do not see as a blind Trump supporters.

Cohen is not proud of some of what he has done for Trump in the past, I said, but his judgments in the time and believes that some of the current criticism based on 20/20 hindsight.

The lawyer from New York, often called the ” Trump “fixer” recently, the company parted ways with his lawyers and hired former state’s attorney, Guy Petrillo and former Clinton White House lawyer Lanny Davis.

An important note on the interview, based on my reporting, answers to the President, the ongoing battles with the law enforcement authorities and the intelligence services, and also its foreign Cohen’s

These are far away from the topics that Cohen has in General discussed in the past.

Cohen took a firm Stand on the Russian meddling in the 2016 campaign, a conclusion embraced by the President has never fully.

“I deny Russia or any other foreign government, to try to disturb or you in our democratic process,” he said. The break with trump, Cohen said, that “I, our nation’s respect of the secret services” and the “unanimous conclusions” about Moscow’s role. To Trump, perhaps the most direct challenge, who meets with the Russian leader this month, he said: “Simply the denial of Mr. Putin, do not accept is not sustainable.”

As part of its strategy of distancing, Cohen himself in 2016, Trump Tower meeting between Donald Trump Jr, Paul Manafort, and Jared Kushner and a Russian lawyer, who took on the year said, with dirt on Hillary Clinton. Cohen called this a “mistake” and “bad judgment” by the members of the trump camp.

In declining to Mueller criticize Russia probe, Cohen expressly Trump’s favorite phrase is to discredit the special counsel and its operation will not be rejected: “I know how the term witch-hunt.”

Cohen has said that the FBI agents searched his house and hotel-room – in what the President as “an attack on our country,” acted in a professional manner. With Stephanopoulos, he added: “I agree with those who demonize or to denigrate the FBI. I respect the FBI as an institution, as well as their representatives.”

Once a registered Democrat, Cohen views the President made false statements to the FBI and intelligence officials, and this has to be a sense of alienation and the belief that his former patron has changed. These feelings are inseparable from Cohen’s personal sense of disappointment, he feels abandoned by trump.

Cohen went on in the interview to answer questions, on his lawyers’ advice about the $ 130,000 payment in the campaign the last few weeks, to porn actress Stormy Daniels, is to keep quiet about what you a 2006 affair with trump was claimed. Cohen may have some legal exposure, which is reimbursed from the-silence-of money, for which he was, of trump.

Such questions, of course that would be part of each interview was the reason Cohen decided to speak, “Good Morning America” co-anchor on the plate, but in front of the camera. Cohen and his team don’t want to refuse, viral video clips of him repeatedly to answer questions.

Journalists speculate constantly about whether Cohen tilting, by deciding to testify against Trump in exchange for immunity. This question can not be answered because at the moment, his lawyers have no way to know what fees, if any, he may face. And while Cohen certainly offer could be embarrassing details about the celebrity business man he served, it is far from clear that he will be legally harmful information.

Rudy Giuliani, Trump’s attorney, in a significantly supportive tone towards Cohen yesterday, he said he should be cooperation with the public Prosecutor’s office. “I hope that Michael is able to clear himself, because I think what was done to him was really unfair … I have no concerns that Michael Cohen will do anything but tell the truth,” the former mayor of New York, said Stephanopoulos on “This week.”

Some of the media chatter suggests that Cohen made his move, in the hope of a possible pardon by the President. But I am told that he to a make-nice approach, not confrontation, if that was his goal.

Michael Cohen once said, he would take a bullet for Donald Trump. To warn if he had tried, the President and his legal team that the offer is, he’s succeeded.
