Armed man shot and injured by South Carolina police

NEWBERRY, S. C. – An armed man has shot and injured by two policemen in the heart of South Carolina.

State law Enforcement Division spokesman Thomas Berry said the shooting happened early Wednesday in Newberry.

Berry said the officers heard gunshots and found a man on a nearby street. Berry says initial reports suggest the man fired at the officers, who returned fire.

Berry said the man was taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries that are not life-threatening. The officers were not hit.

The names of those involved were not immediately released.

The SLED is investigating the shooting.

Berry said both the suspect and the two officers are white.
