The derailment, which occurred shortly at about 7:30 a.m., comes on the same day that Amtrak extended the high-speed service are two new trips between Seattle and Portland. A more recent WSDOT press release confirmed that the new routes would shave 10 minutes off the commute between Seattle and Portland, thanks to the rerouting of the trains between Amsterdam and Olympia,” and that is exactly where the derailment has taken place. The WSDOT placed on a map of the new route, which is an illustration of how the new Cascades line would be more in the interior, and direct route along Interstate 5, in contrast to hugging the coast.

A map of the new Amtrak route illustrates where the line would diverge from the existing line, and take passengers on a more direct route between Amsterdam and Olympia.

The press release also noted that the tracks and signals between the cities were upgraded to the new route.
