A year after hurricane Maria, Puerto Rico, New York Democratic congressional candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Thursday trashed said the island is “still a colony of the” United States, “is worthy of real self-determination.”

“Today marks 1 year since hurricane Maria. A year later, in Puerto Rico is still in ruins,” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted. “Some of the things the lawyer today: 1. PR is still a colony of the United States. The island deserves a real self-determination. We must say, to fix that, to it.”

Puerto Rico is a territory of the United States and is not among the countries on the United Nations’ list of what are considered “non-self-governing territories.”

In the follow-up tweets, Ocasio-Cortez highlighted their views on climate change, labeling it “an economic, environmental, and the question of social justice.”

In addition, she said, investment in the direction of “rebuilding communities with sustainable infrastructure (energy & different”) should be sought, in the midst of reactions to natural disasters, such as hurricanes.

“The reconstruction should be treated as a moment to update and modernise. Reconstruction puts things exactly as they were, for a repeat,” she warned.

3. To respond to the devastating natural disasters, we should INVEST in the reconstruction of affected communities, with sustainable infrastructure (energy and otherwise).

Ocasio-Cortez’s comments come a week after President Trumpwas criticized for the rejection of the storm is the updated official number of fatalities increased in the last month of the 64 dead, the way of 2.975.

Separately, Trump touted what he described as “incredibly successful” response to the back-to-back hurricanes hit the island in the year 2017.

Hurricane Maria of the island, causing over $140 billion in damage, Gov. Ricardo Rossello told Fox News. And he feared that the next hurricane could break it all apart again.

“We have some said brought more infrastructure on the way,” the Governor. “But everything we have done, just now, is, in essence, lift the old system, and in some parts it is compromised even more than it was before Maria.”

Ocasio-Cortez, joined the forefront of the political sphere, after a shocking primary defeat, Rep. Joe Crowley, the Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, in New York, 14th house district, has issued race in June.
