Alexa Ray Joel on Beauty Tips She Learned From my Mother
Alexa Ray Joel tells us about the beauty tips and hand-me-downs she’s learned from my mother, iconic model Christie Brinkley.
Alexa Ray Joel, the daughter of singer-songwriter Billy Joel and supermodel Christie Brinkley, insisted they never got a special treat growing up in the spotlight.
“I grew up in a rather old-fashioned way, believe it or not,” the 32-year-old recently told Closer Weekly. “Literally, if I don’t say ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ to the waiter, that I would get a gentle tap on the shoulder], ‘You have to say please.'”
And while her parents divorced when she was only 8 years old, Joel said that she never rebelled in her teens.
“I hear how Drew Barrymore grew up to go to the bars — I was never allowed,” said Joel. “I was sheltered.”
Instead, Joel had to be the family with the now 69-year-old artist and the 64-year-old Sports Illustrated cover girl — and she wouldn’t have had it any other way.
“We would sit and play music,” Joel recalled. “My father plays the piano, I would sing ‘Sound of Music’ and my mother would dress me up. I just had so much fun with them, that I never in the crazy party scene.”
Joel still shares a close, loving relationship with her parents. In fact, Brinkley is eager to guide her daughter as she prepares for her forthcoming wedding to restaurateur Ryan Gleason.
Joel announced her engagement on Instagram earlier this year.
…So I was totally off-guard, dumbstruck, shell-shocked and FOR ONCE in my life, I had absolutely no words, and I couldn’t speak… I just kept staring at this ridiculously beautiful ring and he was just hysterical laughing at me!!! 🕊💎🕊
Joel has always relied on its people for support. Back in 2015, she told Fox News that her father had a great influence on her and she began her own career as a solo artist, while making a name for themselves.
She describes how her father would support her by calmly catching a number of her performances while wearing a cap to avoid being recognized.
“He can transcend genres, and do these different voices,” she shared. “He can do that more doo-wop, Frankie-Valli and the Four Seasons sound that he does on ’52nd Street’, but he can be more of a classic rock ‘n’ roll man, which he does on ‘Glass Houses’.
“I learned a lot about the embracing of all different genres, in contrast to simply connected. I learned a lot from him. He’s like a musical encyclopedia.”
And as for Brinkley? Joel said that she inherited much of the style of her mother. The two women posed together, along with the younger sister of Sailor Brinkley-Cook, for the 2017 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue.
At the time, Joel recalled how, growing up in a famous family was difficult, because critics would make fun of her face.
Still, Joel previously told Fox News it was Brinkley who encouraged her to have confidence, as well as an embrace of themselves, inside and out
“I’ve learned almost everything from my mother,” said Joel. “She taught me a lot about taking care of yourself — the care of the skin, great make-up tricks. She is very good at putting together that very easily the style of look… [And] she has the best style. She is really the most stylish woman I know. I’m just trying to keep up!”
