Alabama to execute the convicted bomber almost 30 years later

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – It’s been almost 30 years ago that the U.S. Circuit Judge Robert S. Vance was killed by a mail bomb exploded in his house in a suburb of Birmingham, Alabama. The state is now preparing for the execution of the man convicted in Vance’s death.

The long-delayed resolution for the old crime comes as Texas officials are struggling with a deadly three weeks bombing spree that ended Wednesday when the suspect blew himself up.

Alabama has an April 19 date for the 82-year-old Walter Leroy Moody, Jr., He is on death row since his conviction of capital murder in Vance’s death in 1996.

Vance’s son, Robert Vance Jr. says he feels for the Texas bombing of the victims.

Prosecutors say Moody targeted Vance, anger over the decision of a judge.
