Two masked men wielding swords trying to rob a dollar store in Alabama last week before they were thwarted by an employee carrying a gun, investigators said.

The suspects burst into a Family Dollar in Birmingham last week, on Wednesday and demanded money from the clerk, but bolted after he showed them his firearm, police said.

Precious Spencer had only on the job for a few days when she described how one of her managers a gun to fend of the “medieval” robbers, Fox 6 reported.

The suspects bolted after an employee pulled his gun, police said.

“He got to the end of the corridor and said: “they steal, they rob us,’… they came here with swords and that kind of threw us for a loop, since nobody really got robbed, with swords,” Spencer told the news station. “What were they going to do, chop our heads off and get the stuff?”

Spencer said one of the men held a short sword and the other held a long one. She says that the manager decided to get involved to prevent someone from getting hurt.

“He said:” they spoil us too much and why I have my gun,’ and I understand why he feels the way he feels. He tries to secure himself and protect the people that are here,” she added.

None of the other employees was allowed to have firearms, Spencer said, adding that the store was going to hire an armed guard after the recent break-ins. Spencer says the shop had been involved in 13 attack attempts in the last five months.

“Fortunately no one was injured,” said Birmingham Police Sgt. Johnny Williams. “We want everyone to realize that, although this might seem funny to some, we still believe that these guys are dangerous. That weapon of choice at the time was a machete or a sword, but these guys can easily escalate to the use of other weapons, such as firearms.”
