WASHINGTON – The senior U. S. Navy officer overseeing the military operations in the Pacific ocean, says the North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un and the long-term goal is to reunite the shared Korean Peninsula under his totalitarian regime.
Adm. Harry Harris Jr. tells the House Armed Services Committee, there is a prevailing belief that Kim needs a nuclear arsenal to protect his regime. But Harris says Kim is after more.
He says Kim’s “long view” is a reunification under “a single Communist system.”
Harris says any future talks with North Korea should be focused on freeing the peninsula of nuclear weapons.
Harris was in uniform for nearly four decades. He led the U.S. Pacific Command since May 2015 and the last week Trump announced that he the nomination of Harris to be U.S. ambassador to Australia. The post requires Senate confirmation.
