The 42-year-old Harlem mother was brought up in the death of her 5-year-old daughter in their own home, and in the hands of a jealous husband, who had threatened to kill them both if she tried to divorce him — has dedicated her life to helping the women and girls are driven from their homes by war and disaster.
Tragedy of a mother by Jennifer Schlecht, 42, was mourned Thursday by one of her colleagues in the Family Planning 2020, a group that advocates for the reproductive health of women and girls in Africa and South-east Asia.

The team members are “utterly devastated,” FOP2020’s Executive Director, Beth Schlachter said in a statement.
“Jennifer Schlecht has dedicated her entire career to ensuring that women and girls in crisis situations have access to the best medical care possible, including family planning and reproductive health care,” the statement read.
“She was a leader in the field of family planning, humanitarian assistance, and it had to be to work in New York city, so they can have more time with her, my dear daughter,” the statement read. “It was nice for us to talk about her daughter’s first day of kindergarten and primary school, and the clothes that she picked out all by herself.”
“In addition to a caring, loving mother, for her contribution to the lives of women and girls, including those living in crisis situations, it is most of the time. That is, they have to die under such brutal circumstances, it is beyond the mind.”

Her husband, Yonathan Tedla, 46, a silver hunting knife with a four – to five-inch blade to slash her throat with such force that it was decapitated, police said on Thursday.

Tedla, then turned the knife to the couple’s daughter, Abaynesh, cut her throat, before hanging herself in the girl’s bedroom door with a length of rope, the sources said.
Prior to her work in Family Planning, Schlecht, was a senior advisor on sexual and reproductive health, Women’s Refugee Commission, and the chief executive of the HIV Support Services at Harlem Hospital, according to her LinkedIn profile.
She was a graduate of Columbia University’s School of Social Work.
