Researchers have developed a new blood test being developed that doctors within a few hours can determine whether a coughing patient with fever a bacterial or viral infection. It is thus possible to prevent unnecessary use of antibiotics to reduce, reports the UMC Utrecht Thursday.
Often, the cause of fever or respiratory problems in children is not clear. Doctors can, on the basis of the complaints make no distinction between an infection by a bacterium or a virus. But for the security is often already a course of antibiotics prescribed.
The research, under the leadership of the UMC, was carried out at almost six hundred young children. The test showed in almost all children the right result to give. When the test comes on the market, however, is not yet known.
The results of the study are published this week in the medical journal Lancet Infectious Diseases.
