Police say a car entered the Sears at the Woodfield Mall, and drove aimlessly through the shopping centre today, the former NYPD Detective Pat Brosnan weighs in at.
A man accused of driving an SUV through the suburbs of Chicago to the mall earlier this month, and sent frightened shoppers scurrying for cover, is now facing a state terrorism charge, officials announced on Sunday.
Javier Garcia, 22, of Palatine, Ill., it was charged with a felony count each of “terrorism” and criminal damage to property, according to a statement released on Facebook by the Schaumburg Police Department. A judge denied him bail, Fox 32 reported. Police said early Sunday, in the morning, the Cook County state’s attorney had approved the charges against Garcia.
“The investigation, the police found Garcia, who was acting alone,” according to the police, in a statement. “A motive has not been determined. The police have no reason to believe Garcia was targeted at a specific person and/or to store them in Sears or the Woodfield Mall.”

Garcia, who allegedly crashed a black Chevy Trailblazer in the area of the Sears and Rainforest Cafe, in Woodfield Mall, at about 2:30 p.m. on Sept. 20, and then drove in through the ground floor of the shopping center.

The vehicle then proceeded at high speed through the mall, crashing into several of the displays.
The 22-year-old was stopped by shoppers, for the officers came and took him into custody, police said. No one was hit by a car, but three people were taken to a hospital for a “very minor” injuries, police said at the time.
A Video of the incident showed shoppers running for cover, in the course of the Woodfield Mall on black Chevrolet Trailblazer plowed through it. The video is posted on Twitter, and has amassed over 10 million views.

After his arrest, police said the suspect has been sent to AMITA Health, behavioral Medicine, Institute for treatment, but was released on Sept. 27. He was transferred to the custody of the Schaumburg Police department after his release from jail, officials said on Sunday.

Shortly after the incident, the Schaumburg police chief Bill Wolf said the suspect may have been suffering from a medical condition.
Under Illinois law, a Class X offense of terrorism if the suspect is believed to have caused more than $100,000 in damage to a building that contains five or more businesses, according to a statement issued by the Schaumburg Police department Sgt. Karen McCarthy.
