NEW YORK – Seven people are injured, two seriously, when an escalator in a New York City mall fails, causing one person to fall and set off a chain reaction along the line.
The accident Tuesday night took place at the Atlantic Terminal Mall in Brooklyn.
Witnesses say that the escalator down was stationary when it suddenly began to move, causing the first person to deposit.
Two people were rushed to Lutheran Hospital in serious, but stable condition. Officials say their injuries are not life-threatening. Five others were taken to Long Island College Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
The mall escalators were taken out of service.
Mall officials have not returned requests seeking comment.
