6 Florida inmates get sick after smoking smuggling of marijuana

CARRABELLE, Fla. – Authorities said a Florida woman is arrested for alleged smuggling of contraband in a state prison managed to distribute a very powerful synthetic marijuana to inmates after she was booked into a jail.

Six Franklin County Jail inmates were rushed to a hospital Monday, suffering from the symptoms associated with K2. Sheriff A. J. Smith tells the News-Herald five inmates were treated and returned to the prison Tuesday. The sixth was airlifted to Tallahassee and is in the intensive care unit.

They say 56-year-old Vanda McElveen was strip-searched at the jail on Saturday, but the officers not the drugs. The sheriff says a female inmate later helped remove from a body cavity. Prisoners who smoked the drug on Monday began vomiting, hallucinating and having convulsions. One was given CPR by prison staff.
