5-house Democrats took a $60,000 trip to South Africa for Beyoncé concert, records show

Five members of the Congressional Black Caucus, a $60,000 trip to see Beyoncé and other stars perform in concert in South Africa at the end of last year, according to congressional records publication.

The legislators were U.S. Reps. Gregory Meeks of New York, Barbara Lee of California, Bobby Rush of Illinois, Terri Sewell of Alabama and Hank Johnson from Georgia, according to the data.

They visited the “Global Citizen, 100 Mandela” – concert of Dec. 1-3, to celebrate the centenary of the birth of the late Nelson Mandela and awareness for global poverty. In addition to Beyoncé, other musical acts also her husband Jay Z, Ed Sheeran, Pharrell Williams and Chris Martin.

The trip was paid for by Global Citizen, a non-profit that lobbies for anti-poverty reported programs around the world, the Washington Examiner. A representative for Sewell said, that the trip “was already approved by the house ethics Committee and was not paid for at tax payer expense” and “Rep. Sewell and several other members attended the Global Citizen, Mandela 100 Festival, a platform for the heads of state and government speak out against racial injustice and inequality, and voice your support for the international aid for the disadvantaged groups of the population.”

According to the travel route, the members of the Congress have been in South Africa for a whole day and two partial days for the trip.
