About two dozen Carnival Cruise Line passengers were removed from the Legend on Friday after a violent brawl that one onlooker described as a “massacre.”

The Carnival Legend is scheduled to dock in Melbourne on Saturday after a 10-day trip through the South of the Pacific ocean, but was forced to an unplanned stop in Eden, New South Wales, where the police handed the unruly passengers, reports 9 News Australia.

Witnesses say that the fight broke out early Friday morning between a big family, the guests and employees, and grew to the point where passengers were “really scared for [their] safety.”

Images of the ship shows a number of passengers punching, kicking and wrestling with each other on the floor, while the security officers attempting to break up the melee. Some of the officers are seen kicking and fighting with the passengers themselves.

At one point in the footage, a female employee is seen trying to swat at the person filming the fight, probably in an attempt to stop him/her to shoot.

Passengers aboard the Carnival Legend said that some of the unruly passenger was “looking into the issues the minute they got on the ship,” said a witness, who spoke with Melbourne’s 3AW Radio.

“My husband said to take [their behavior] away, because the children here, and five of them surrounded my husband … They told us to watch our backs,” the woman added, per 9 News.

Other passengers recalled that a few of the brawlers have been involved in previous fights on the ship, and had threatened to stab and throw people overboard. One even went as far as to make the entire trip a “cruise from hell.”

When docking in Eden, the police in New South Wales removed six men and three boys, and the other 14 passengers on board went along with the group. Carnival has now confirmed that they were members of the same family.

“The police have been told that a fight involving several men took place on board the ship, after a discussion about 12.45 pm today. Security intervened and detained the men, prior to the notification of the Marine Area Command,” confirmed the New South Wales police, adding that they will investigate the incident.

“The group were transported to Canberra, where other arrangements are made.”
